    Oh and lifters are usually in great shape. Just check for wear.

  • @hummernutsfl
    @hummernutsfl 7 месяцев назад

    The cam is usually in great shape. Just inspect it. The spot where the fuel pump rides is usually the high wear spot. Springs just need inspected for cracks and height. Valves can be used if they are in good shape. New ones are fairly cheap. I always replace the valve guides. They almost always are worn. That sucks oil and reduces compression when the valves are sloppy. Bearings are a must most times. Have the crank checked and polished or ground. Plasigauge every bearing.

  • @olivedrabgarage6243

    • @hummernutsfl

      If they are in good shape, you can use them. They don't get much stetch and are fairly oversized to begin with. .never had an issue.

    Isn't the squirt hole the Dodge straight 6 flathead oriented towards the cam to cover the cam with oil ...how come the Jeep motor is opposite? How does the cam get oiled?

  • @olivedrabgarage6243
    @olivedrabgarage6243 7 месяцев назад

    Quick question Lew...any particular reason why you didn't reuse the original pistons other than boring out to a bigger size?

    • @hummernutsfl
      @hummernutsfl 7 месяцев назад

      They wear oval and putting an oval piston in a round hole is a bad deal. Pistons are not cheap but not really that expensive. If you bore the cylinders, I always use ne pistons and rings. Compression will be like factory new and lots of power. Hone and rering jobs always use oil, smoke alot and have less power.

    • @olivedrabgarage6243
      @olivedrabgarage6243 7 месяцев назад

      @hummernutsfl cheers mate, so basically best to just get new internals all around or do you think you can get away with using original valves, springs, rods, lifters, cam and crank? I'd assume the cam and crank would be good so long as they get polished and measured for new bearings yeah?

    What is the usual life of a quality engine rebuild such as yours?

    • @hummernutsfl
      @hummernutsfl Год назад

      I imagine one will get about 100k if maintained. Those old motors do not last as long as modern stuff but they do well for the technology. They are a low rpm, low compression motor so the bearings last a long time. The down side is the long stroke causes more ring and piston wear so they slowly become oval shaped. Takes a inside micrometer to measure the cylinders but that is why a hone job is a waste.

    • @kumsuk77777

    Hey, when you are checking the endplay on the crank, their is a little cylinder at the top of the dial indicator, that you can use to retract it while you are banging the crank forward, they are pretty delicate inside, and don't like to get hammered on. Not trying to be mr know it all, I just figured with how nice you are to your torque wrench, you would want to be at least as nice to your dial indicator, which is a lot more delicate inside. Thanks for the vids.

    I like to use machinist "way oil" to hose out the swarf and junk out of the oil passages. It's basically designed to float all those sharp bits of metal out of the super tight bearing surfaces in in a machine tool, so might work well for junk packed in those hard to reach places. I am a machinist, and I find casting sand in 50+ year old engines all the time, from when they were just little baby engines, hah.

    IMPORTANT: Make sure your voltage regulator has a good solid ground. The regulator has NO solid state components which means it will work on EITHER positive or negative ground systems. If you have a six volt system you need a six volt regulator. Same with 12-volt. You briefly mention three relays inside the regulator. The CUTOUT relay disconnects the battery from the charging system with the key off. The other two relays control battery voltage and generator output current. So, when we turn the key on, how does the cutout relay energize (since the battery is disconnected)... There are resistors connected to the regulator case (usually visible from the back of the regulator). When the generator starts charging, current goes through the cutout relay coil, through the resistors, to ground which pulls the cutout relay in which also re-connects the battery. The cutout relay is the only one with normally OPEN contacts. If you have a dashboard GEN light, it will shine brightly until the cutout relay contacts close. The current relay regulates the generator field. More field voltage makes the generator outputs more. So, for troubleshooting purposes, if you temporarily jumper the BATT terminal to the FLD terminal, your generator will output at its maximum current. The voltage relay senses when the battery is up to voltage, then it 'dithers' on and off to maintain proper battery voltage. THIS is the relay to adjust for proper battery voltage. One last thought: Stay away from 8-volt batteries. Your system is designed to charge six volts. An 8-volt battery will never fully charge on a six volt system which shortens the battery life.

    So I'm not sure if this will retain to what you're saying in your video. I have a 4 cylinder engine that was from world war II ZXB M5 GENERATOR. It has an aftermarket regulator and breaker box. So I got to figure out what wires go where. At the moment I'm just interested in trying to get the battery to charge and make the gauge work.ATM Gauge is not responding because there's no wires coming off the regulator going to a battery source. It's just a generator ran from the engine on a belt and then there's three wires coming out of the generator light yellow and green that goes to the regulator. The white wire is battery the yellow wire is armature and the green wire is FLD. I truly don't understand this even if you tell me the easiest way to do it. From the regulator do I just need to run a wire straight to the battery or get a wire from the regulator from The battery source on the regulator to the positive side of the battery cable that's on the back of the gauge panel?
